울타리는 나무로 이루어진 울타리 모양의 블럭이다. 이것은 플레이어나 몹에게는 1.5칸으로 인식되지만 다른 블럭에게는 1칸으로 인식된다. 울타리는 울타리가 설치된 y축과 같은 축에서 점프해 넘을수 없다. 울타리는 연결시키면 자동으로 옆의 울타리와 연결된다. 검으로 빨리 부수어지지만, 검의 내구도가 두배 가량 빨리 닳게 된다.

용도
울타리의 원래 용도는 어떤 구역을 둘러싸는 것이다. 기능적으로, 울타리는 몹과 플레이어를 안쪽 또는 바깥쪽에 있도록 한다. 한 구역을 울타리로 둘러싸고 그 안쪽을 확실하게 밝게 해두면, 그 구역에서는 몬스터에게 저항할 수 있게 된다. 이렇게 하면 어떤 몬스터라도 울타리 안에서 스폰되지 않고, 밖에서 소환된 대부분의 몬스터가 들어오지 못한다; 그 예외는 울타리를 타고 오를 수 있는 거미이다. 추가로, 스켈레톤은 울타리를 통과할 수 없지만, 울타리 너머로 화살을 쏠 수는 있다.

Before the official release of Minecraft, fence corners did not need to be complete in order to be sealed. A corner where two directions meet at a right angle could be created without the actual corner piece. This would create two separate fences which terminate next to each other without actually touching. While there is a visible gap, players and mobs will still be unable to pass through. This feature could be used to create lengths of diagonal fences, which will appear as nothing but posts, yet will still prevent anything from passing. However, in 1.0.0, the fence's collision box was fit around the fence itself (except for the 1.5 height), thus requiring the corner fence.
Fences can also be used to fuel a furnace, although the player would be better off using the two and a half wooden planks used to create each fence for fueling instead.

울타리를 떠오른 땅에 3-5칸의 너비로 놓으면 다리를 만들 수 있다. 그리고, 난간 용도로 그 옆에 울타리를 놓는다. 그 다음, 가운데 1-3줄에 압력 발판을 놓는다.
울타리는 효과적인 물 엘레베이터에 쓰일 수도 있다. 2x2 크기의 공간 앞에 물을 두고 그 뒤에 울타리를 쌓아 올린다. 이 울타리는 완전한 고체 블록이 아니므로 숨을 쉴 수 있게 해주기도 한다.

Multiple fences can be stacked on top of each other by creating a wall of blocks one layer shorter than the intended height of the fence and working down. Removing blocks from underneath the fence doesn't cause it to collapse like cacti and doors, so the lower layers of the wall can one-by-one be replaced by fences easily.This can also easily be done under water with no need for walls or layers below the fence,you can stack fences underwater just like any other block, beginning with one fence post at the very bottom.This allows the players to make thin pillars or chandeliers to seemingly support floating blocks for decoration purposes.

Future Plans
There may be plans to add a gate, which would most likely be placed like a fence, and fit aesthetically with other fence pieces. However, it would act like a door, where you would click it to open it. Doors work fine as a substitution, but they just look out of place between fence posts. This topic is most recognized at this thread on Getsatisfaction.com, where Notch himself commented saying "Hmmm... Possibly! Why not?". That thread was later marked "Under Consideration".
